You can't watch DVDs you bought

„Sure, 321's copies are digital, but the court doesn't claim to be making a digital/non-digital distinction dispositive. Oh, by the way, that device that connects between your DVD player and TV and makes non-digiital copies onto VHS is called a "VCR." That's right. On one reading of this opinion, your VCR is now illegal.“

„Finally, one point that I just cannot pass up mentioning is that in the patent, immediately after explaining how women complain about the failure of men to lower a toilet seat after use, the inventor makes the parenthetical remark: "Never heard are complaints about women not putting the seat up after use!" Discretion being the better part of valor, I will just report this statement, reserve any comment and step back and let the water cooler chat begin. „In order to resolve that question, we need not explore all the different potential uses of the machine.” It is not an infringement for Sony to have brought to market a machine that enables easy home copying of Universal’s films from TV. The Court held that, “The District Court found: ‘Even if it were deemed that home-use recording of copyrighted material constituted infringement, the Betamax could still legally be used to record noncopyrighted material or material whose owners consented to the copying. An injunction would deprive the public of the ability to use the Betamax for this noninfringing off-the-air recording.’ ” People who make TV copies enable themselves to see films they want by capturing them on tape and watching them later. Why now all the fuss about copying? “http://www.musiclawyer.com/lib/ napsterdcssp2.html - Cached - Similar Pages
„If you don't have a good local video store, DVD rental by mail is a great alternative. If you don't mind planning ahead, and you watch at least five DVDs each month, these services offer both convenience and value.“http://www.techstuff.ca/archives/517.html - Cached - Similar Pages
„You watch all three movies immediately on Wednesday night and drop them in a mailbox before morning. The DVDs spend Thursday in the mail, arriving back at the rental place on Friday, where they are instantly processed and your next order prepared. The next three DVDs will spend the following Monday in the mail and arrive no sooner than the following Tuesday.“http://www.techstuff.ca/archives/492.html - Cached - Similar Pages
„I began noticing this a year ago, when my own daughter began exhibiting developed different viewing habits and strategies depending on whether she was watching regular TV, videos and DVDs. She understands that with "regular" television, you have to watch whatever is on. With videos, you have some degree of control over how you watch: you can fast-foward through scary parts, for example, or pause to get more juice.“http://Blogger.iftf.org/Future/000308.html - Cached - Similar Pages

„More notably though, it seems like DVDs are particularly susceptible to damage. Stand-alone DVD players are decent at masking errors, but my computer’s DVD player regularly chokes on rental DVDs, occasionally even to the point of crashing the computer. Rentals obviously see a lot more abuse than individually-owned DVDs, but we’re still talking new releases here.“http://attaboy.ca/archives/2004/05/000633.html - Cached - Similar Pages

„In particular, I would like to know how the judge distinguished or followed such decisions as Reimerdes, Elcomsoft, Chamberlain and Lexmark (no 321 because the decision was issued only days before, and 321 doesn't add anything new to the mix). For example, we could have a decision much like the one in Chamberlain, which created a pseudo-distinction because the judge didn't like the outcome logic would have dictated (Judge Asserts Pseudo Distinction to Preserve DMCA).“http://www.corante.com/importance/archives/ 002149.html - Cached - Similar Pages

„The essential facts entitling plaintiffs to injunctive relief against defendants'linking activities remain undisputed. Defendants do not offer any argumentto refute plaintiffs' contentions that (1) linking under the circumstancesof this case, to sites that post DeCSS, constitutes "offering to the public"or "providing" an unlawful circumvention device within the meaning of §1202(a)(2); (2) linking to other sites which post DeCSS is just as effectivea DeCSS delivery mechanism as posting, which this Court already has enjoined;and (3) defendants added 313 hyperlinks to their web site between January20, the date of this Court's Preliminary Injunction Order, and the date ofplaintiffs' motion to modify, and still more since then. „As far as telecommunications present go, I'm happy to see that the new releases of iSync and iCal almost give full support to the Sony Ericsson P800. I can't get the calendar to sync for some reason, but the contacts are doing it nicely and that's a big step in the right direction. Web enabled phone-PDA combos are definitely the way to go if calling or emailing anyone you know without having to hunt for numbers and addresses is important to you, and the P800 1) syncs via Bluetooth with OS X, and 2) lets you wirelessly surf the Web from your Bluetooth/OS X enabled laptop in WiFi free zones.“http://bgbg.blogspot.com/ 2003_10_12_bgbg_archive.html - Cached - Similar Pages
„If it's on the Web a party can simply track it down, without waiting for the other side to provide it. In order for a party to use such informally located material to help present its case, the material probably would have to be disclosed in advance to the other side -- but maybe not, as can be true of material used in arbitration or for impeachment -- and authenticated as evidence. Given the appellate direction my practice has taken in recent years I've never had to lay a foundation for Web material in court, but it seems like it would not be difficult.“http://bgbg.blogspot.com/ 2003_02_09_bgbg_archive.html - Cached - Similar Pages
„The analog spectrograph is composed of four basic parts; (1) a magnetic tape recorder/playback unit, (2) a tape scanning device with a drum which carries the paper to be marked, (3) an electronic variable filter, and (4) an electronic stylus which transfers the analyzed information to the paper. The analog sound spectrograph samples energy levels in a small frequency range from a magnetic tape recording and marks those energy levels on electrically sensitive paper. This instrument then analyses the next small frequency range and samples and marks the energy levels at that point.“http://www.owlinvestigations.com/forensic_articles/.../ fulltext.html - Cached - Similar Pages
