Comment: Picture quality was fantastic Rating:
I got this after having first tried the Samsung 1080I-720P with DVI connection. I have a Toshiba 51in. HD ready monitor. the Samsung was very expensive, and the picture quality did not impress as it should have (highest quality connections). Bare in mind, with that unit, if the DVD was recorded in the highter resolution, it was fine, but did little to improve older films.
The SONY on the other hand, (once properly set up, which can take some time if you unfarmiliar with the new technology) this machine is quite impressive for its lower-end price with a picture quality that rivals the samsung I paid twice as much for. For dvd's recorded in higher end resolutions, the picture comes out near perfect, while old recordings, such as tv shows (ex. X-files) are smoothed to improve quality. This method is also imployed on VCD and DVD-R's which can suffer in quality. I would highly recommend this product, though be warned. Improperly set up, and you'll not get the best of what this can offer.

Comment: Watch Out if you burn your own VCDs or SVCDs Rating:
We burn and use VCDs (Video Compact Discs) at work and we purchased one of these machines to play music CDs, in-house VCDs, and both in-house and commercial DVDs. The documentation claims that the player supports all of these and CD/RW. Not true. The machine will indeed play all of the above, it just doesn't do it very well. Commercial DVDs seem to work just fine as do music CDs, but this player is lousy at playing VCDs. The picture is very poor, much poorer than on any other desktop player that I have tried, and the audio is completely out-of-sync on VCDs. I couldn't believe that a Sony machine could be such a disaster, so we sent the machine back for a replacement. I had to assume that the first machine was faulty. Not so. The second player is just as bad as the first. This is a very poorly designed player, at least for video compact disks. We have not tried the player with our own DVDs and now that I think about it, we have not tried it with in-house music CDs. I would recommend caution with this player.

Comment: A little lacking in features, but a solid Sony product Rating:
This player doesn't support WMA, DVD-Audio, JPEG files, and this one isn't even progressive scan, but how many folks have a progressive-scan-ready TV anyway who are looking for a ...player? It's a solid player with a good picture and it plays DVD-R and DVD-RW, which was high on my list of requirements. I also tried the Sony DVP-NC665P, which is 100% identical to this player except for the progressive scan feature.

The changing mechanism is a little noisy compared the the Panasonic S65, but unlike that brand, the Sony is fairly intuitive to operate and basic operation can be done at the unit via the buttons. Discs load quickly as well. I found the Panasonic changers (including the S65) to be clunky and non-intuitive. They have a quiet changing mechanism, but getting a disc to play at all takes some practice if it isn't the one you just inserted. In contrast the Sony is easy to use.

One interesting feature: This player will automatically search for another disc to play if you remove a disc. This can be really irritating for two reasons - 1, if the next disc is a CD and you have the DVD audio running to your TV, you will be blasted by the overdriven output - TV speakers can't handle it, and 2, if the next disc is a DVD, you can't stop it until it goes through its pre-feature stuff in many cases. You can get around this by removing a disc and pressing OFF instead of close - this prevents the disc from searching for another disc.

I like the remote, I like the picture, and I'm a bit of a Sony loyalist, so I recommend this product.
