Sony announces the Betamax of DRM systems

Jonathan on 2002/08/09:
„Sony's system requires Sony proprietary playback software and/or hardware (Memory stick MP3 and MiniDisc players). The software components, however are brain-damaged, the MAGIQLIP player must talk back to the server to validate that the user has rights to play the song a la DIVX (the failed DVD competitor , not the video compressor ) and the OpenMG jukebox that places significant hurdles around fair use.“

„Kevin at MediAgora points at the excellent Association of American Publishers "DRM for eBooks Publisher Requirements 1.0" whitepaper. It is a well-written, deep look at what DRM can offer and the functionality needed at each stage of the content lifecycle (creation/publication, marketing/distribution, sales, use and customer support). What is interesting is that a significant number of features would allow publishers to create products that are far more restrictive than current copyright law allows for paper products while others would allow consumers more power than they currently are able to easily exercise.“http://www.way.nu/archives/2002_08.html#000365 - Cached - Similar Pages

„Dan Gilchrist points out Bret Fausett's rant on Sony's NetMD uploading oppression . Apparently ICANN meetings in Amsterdam were recorded to Minidisc with the intention of putting them online, only later was it learned how "spectacularly awful" Minidisc is at moving audio to PC.“http://www.minidisc.org/old_news_2002.html - Cached - Similar Pages
„Given that DRM is essentially useless against anyone who understands it, I have to assume that the point of DRM is not really to restrict the consumer but to calm the suppliers, i.e., the music companies. It provides the illusion of control, in that most people are indeed ignorant of the details of digital rights management, and have little to no interest in taking the time to learn more about it, and while it taxes the ignorant, it doesn't punish them the way other schemes do, like the recent attempt to introduce encoding to block people from playing CDs on their PCs. That's enough for the music companies for the moment.“http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/archives/ 000582.html - Cached - Similar Pages

„There's a fascinating clump of posts going around the place at the moment about the various DRM-based digital audio solutions that you can buy at the moment. The one that kicked stuff off initially was a post on The Sobleizer (A challenge for webloggers: handling organizational difficulties ) which included a chunk of stuff about why it's best for people who are going to buy music files with DRM to buy them in Windows Media format. Here's the main chunk of the argument:“http://www.stargeek.com/item/71962.html - Cached - Similar Pages

„My friend's country has been identified as one from which all males resident in the U.S. must register with the government and be fingerprinted. That identification is somewhat dubious; even the American ambassador in the country said that Washington had made a mistake and should reconsider. My friend is a man America should be proud to call one of its own.“http://www.thereisnocat.com/2003_02_01_arc.html - Cached - Similar Pages
