  • Offers progressive-scan output with 3:2 pulldown for distortion-free viewing of 24 fps movies

Product Description:

Description from Manufacturer: Philips's slim, affordable DVD727 features high-end progressive-scan component-video outputs and built-in decoding for MP3 music files, as well as JPEG image CD playback so you can enjoy digital slideshows right in the living room. It also converts non-region-encoded PAL-formatted discs (the standard in Europe) for viewing on standard NTSC televisions.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD727 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The DVD727 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The player will play JPEG images one by one automatically, letting you zoom in, rotate, or flip the picture vertically or horizontally. For MP3 playback, the player offers track time display, album and track selection, and repeat (disc/album/track). It supports nested directory levels up to eight levels, as well as a total of 32 albums and 500 different tracks.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Playback options include five-disc resume, which lets you pick-up where you left off on your five most recently viewed DVDs (not applicable for MP3 or JPEG CDs), enhanced parental control (with 80-disc lockout), and picture zoom for magnification of select images.

Comment: The almost perfect DVD player! Rating: Rating: 5
I honestly do not understand these people who say the unit is bad. Either they just have had the badluck of getting a defective unit or some are just doing something wrong. Its a fantastic unit ESPECIALLY if you have some DVDs that are in PAL Format or are in another Region. It actually has an NTSC to PAL converter and the other way around as well! Nice crisp clear picture and sound! Another explaination about the poor picture is mainly because some DVDs are coded badly OR you have an HD TV in which you clearly see the pixels from DVDs. This is why there is a new type of DVD which is to be released either in 2005 or 2006. This is another reason why I say "almost perfect" because once you start buying the new format, you need to buy a new player which can read that type of format. The image converter can be easily accessed and the region changer? Just open the tray with no DVD on it, press 9999 and the region number you wish to select using the remote. You can try the ZERO Region but I have heard from someone that once you use this option the DVD player locks up. I am not sure wether this is some sort of security lock but it is just best to do the changing. It only takes 2-5 seconds to do the changing anyways! Kudos to Philips for making such an incredible DVD player yet.

Comment: A great buy on a progressive scan DVD! Rating: Rating: 5
I just opened my unit today and set it up. Having owned two other Philips DVD players for over a year and not having any problems with them I chose this progressive unit. After hooking it up to my 60" projection television I jumped onto Amazon to purchase a second unit! Picture quality is GREAT, sound quality
is excellent, and with a quick hack it becomes region free! A built in PAL to NTSC converter gives you a perfect picture when playing region 2 PAL DVDs, even when using the single composite video wire.
At the $69.99 Amazon price this is a hard player to beat! It is finished in silver and has a sleek "mirror" display panel. The remote is a universal type which can control TV volume and channel selection. The remote also has volume control for the DVD audio output, great for taping CD mixes to your tape deck.
All in all this DVD player is a winner at it's price point.

Comment: worked great... for 2 hours Rating: Rating: 2
Got this player because it's supposed to be able to play many different format.. and it does. Played DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW without problem. Even played my MP3 DVD... 2 hours after I plugged this thing in, screen went blank and that was the end of it.

Tray would not eject and I had to ship the player back with my MP3 DVD in it. Now I have to re-rip all of my CDs again! And since this player is discontinued, Amazon could not send me a replacement unit.

All in all, it could've been a beautiful thing..
