NYTimes: the DVD comes of age
[Archived in Computer Dvd Player, Entry]

„I just joined the Modern Age the other week when I bought a DVD player (that isn’t in a computer: I have two of those). I have to say, I’m sold. I may never go to a theater again, though since I have only been once since 1997, that’s not saying a lot.“

„Guess it's time to go rent that Martha Stewart/Billy Tauzin bbq'd shrimp episode to rate his schooze factor. It's possible the requirements and people to know have changed for the top post at the MPAA. But I suspect they wanted the most well connected person they could find, to execute their agenda which seems to skirt public involvement in favor of courting a few powerful folks effectively, quietly, until it's too late for the public to do anything about the policies made that so unfairly tilt the copyright regime in favor of incumbent copyright holders, to the detriment of the public domain and the kind of innovation that leads to new jobs, industries and redistributions of power and wealth across existing industries, as we move deeper into an information economy.“http://journalism.berkeley.edu/projects/biplog/archive/ 2003_10.html#001351 - Cached - Similar Pages

„Kerry's difficulties in "defining himself" have more to do, I think, with his limited access to the media due to lack of money and fair coverage as well as the fact that Bush and his policies are monopolizing coverage for better and for worse. In his affirmation of his alliance with the Kerry campaign, Warren Buffet (when I saw the headline I first thought Jimmy) said that whatever Kerry does has relatively little to do with the outcome of the election because it will be a referendum on Bush. All people want to know is if Kerry is the kind of guy you would pick as the designated driver at a party (in other words, you can trust his sobriety and that he won't do anything crazy), and he certainly fits that bill.“ posted on 2004/07/27http://www.democrats.org/blog/comment/ 00010625.html - Cached - Similar Pages

„Good article (and very long) in today's New York Times about the stresses placed on this generation of 6th graders to compete for college. One of the stressors is the use of standardized tests to make the kids feel they are "good" or "bad" students. The observation is made that these stresses have been heightened since these kids' parents' generation was in 6th grade.“http://interversity.org/lists/arn-l/archives/jul2000/ msg00080.html - Cached - Similar Pages

„The movie is the first big screen portrayal of modern war that I know of, a type of war that isn't fought above the ground inside of airplanes, or behind a television monitoring a smart bomb, or a war that's fought in a remote jungle. Black Hawk Down was urban warfare, fought by American ground soldiers, where our technological superiority was made vulnerable by sheer numbers and innocents didn't have time to get out of the way.“http://kwc.org/blog/archives/ cat_movies.html#000411 - Cached - Similar Pages

„I have to think that IF Academy screeners were a serious source of pirated versions-- and my limited but real experience with downloaded movies suggests that the source is primarily Asian movie theaters lending out their print for overnight transferring-- but if they were a real problem in the first place, the availability of cheap DVD reproducing technology and steganography (digital watermarking) would make it possible to hide a code in the images of every DVD which would make it possible to track copies back to whoever was responsible, just as they do with 35mm prints. (Also, what about that DVD-rusts-in-3-days-after-opening technology they want to use for disposable rentals? Wouldn't this be a great use for that technology the studios are otherwise gung ho about?)“http://rogerlsimon.com/archives/00000408.htm - Cached - Similar Pages
