Product Description:

Early Adopters Pick: April 2003 JVC's XV-N55SL is the world's slimmest DVD player. With its elegant slim-line design and ice-blue illuminated front panel, the XV-N55SL DVD player is not only versatile, but beautiful. And it handles everything from DVD-Video and standard audio CD to audio CD-R and CD-RW discs, MP3 and WMA CD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and even CDs filled with JPEG image files so you can watch digital slide shows on television. JVC's 1-bit P.E.M. D.D. audio converter achieves terrific sonic resolution with a high signal-to-noise ratio. The XV-N55SL has been optimized for the high sampling frequency of 192 kHz, providing an extra-wide dynamic range to realize the benefits of high-spec DVD sources. The model's 10-bit, 54 MHz video sampling frequency ensures detailed images and clear, pure colors for DVD movies. And, with seven parameters to adjust, the unit's Video Fine Processor (VFP) provides exceptional versatility in fine-tuning images to personal preferences. The player provides a choice of either optical or coaxial digital-audio output for routing Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1-channel surround signals to a compatible audio/video receiver. A high-resolution onscreen graphical user interface (GUI) allows Windows-like interactive operation with tool bars superimposed onto the TV screen for simple, point-and-click operation. Other conveniences include AV CompuLink (which optimizes performance when using the player in conjunction with other JVC equipment), Quick Start, 1.5x playback with sound, 13-step zoom, and screen fill (which zooms in on a DVD image to eliminate letterbox "bars" on the TV screen).
From Circuit City There's a world of entertainment in this slim, tiny package. JVC's DVD player is only about 1.8M-^T thick, but it is multi-format capable and progressive-scan capable. The Express Play Start feature makes the first scene of the movie appear onscreen in under 4 seconds. Component video, S-video and composite video outputs make it easy to hook up to your TV, while the optical and coaxial digital audio outputs provide easy connection to your audio system.

Comment: Terrific latest technology in one unit! Rating: Rating: 5
With it's extra-slim design and plenty of features to satisfy any needs, I wonder why the rest of DVD players are so huge (and expensive). At about 7 lbs and less than 2 in. thick it delivers stunning quality picture with most types of disks there are these days.
Certain limitations, like maximum 150 mp3's or jpg's per folder, suggest that you cannot dump all your files in root of the disk, but in 99 out 100 cases that won't matter if your disks are sorted at all.
Cool blue line (can be dimmed) on player's face and glow-in-the-dark buttons on the control unit make it more fun (and practical), and using remote control for TV operation puts both units in harmony (works perfect with my Toshiba TV!)

I highly recommend this DVD player (JVC XV-N50BK) as 1st unit in the household, as well as a replacement for an old one!

Comment: Works great, plays VCD, and all formats Rating: Rating: 5
I purchased the JVC XV-N50BK DVD Player which plays all formats, including my below mentioned VCD, without any problems. I am very happy with the JVC XV-N50BK, and this is the best in the market. Incidently all my other AV components and TV are JVC, and which can all be linked and interconnected with the JVC Compu-Link control system.
Previously ten days before, I purchased the Panasonic S35S DVD Player because I needed a player to play ALL formats including VCD, WMA, MP3, CD-R, etc. Unfortunately, when playing one of my commercially produced VCD's, the Panasonic S35S Player would play for awhile, and then lock and freeze the screen forever, until I turned off the power. And the Panasonic kept on doing it, repeatedly. Sadly I returned the Panasonic for a full refund. (The VCD was not defective, because it plays fine on my older JVC player, and on my computer.). I then purchased the above JVC XV-N50BK DVD Player which plays everything, works great, and looks fabulous.

Comment: 6 months and still loving it. Rating: Rating: 5
Was surprised to see the negatives regarding stutter on this machine. I have about 500 DVD's in my collection, including some VCD's, and DVD's I have burned myself and have not notices any instances of stutter. Am also curious regarding the remark that it stutters when it pans, since the DVD player is just decoding data...and not "panning" anything.

The positives regarding this machine are numerous. It will play disks that will not play on my computer. It's error correction is excellent. The main reason I bought this machine was so that I could play VCD's, CD-R, and DVD+R disks. And it doesn't disappoint. The remote is set up well. There was a previous negative comment that the buttons were too far apart. Personally, I view this as a positive because you can actually use it in the dark because the are far enough apart that you can actually press the right button (one you figure out the pattern that is). The only negative I can see is that the DVD carrying tray itself seems quite flimsy. I can see a pair of little hands snapping it off in a heartbeat! Those of you with small children beware!
