Episode III redux

[Relevant History] My wife and I went to see Episode III: Revenge of the Sith this afternoon-- her first time, my second. The second time around, the parts that aggravated me at first are just as irritating. Natalie Portman's role is even more limited than I remembered: for the first 3/4 of the movie, she doesn't actually leave the house, like some hysterical Victorian spouse.

[Circuit9.blogspot.com] Ninth Circuit Blog: In Gonzalez v. Oregon, a court of appeals case upon which the Oregon Supreme Court has granted review, the court found ineffective assistance of counsel based on misadvice regarding immigration consequences of an aggravated felony. "Because the current immigration scheme all but requires aliens convicted of aggravated felonies to be deported, we conclude that petitioner's trial counsel was obligated to tell petitioner that he was pleading guilty to an aggravated felony and that, unless the United States Attorney General or his designee chose not to pursue deportation proceedings, he would be deported as a result of his guilty plea." Based on Gonzalez, CJA panel attorney Michael Levine prevailed in post-conviction in Washington County, Oregon, in Kishore v. Oregon, a case the state is appealing.

[Cwob.com] Andy Ihnatko's YellowText: And even though this has left me more or less defenseless against the slings and arrows of outrageous temperatures, I refuse to take it out of the hamper and put it back on. After all, swapping the largely-ceremonial thin cotton blanket for something more substantial would be caving in, and would send a dangerous signal to the Weather that it's free to do whatever it wants without any fear of retribution. If we just roll over and play dead every time a hurricane destroys our homes, then what, precisely, is Weather's incentive to show any self-restraint? So I've been shivering in protest — quite valiantly, with my teeth smugly chattering the chatter of the Just — ever since.
