Dvd-Jon pt2

[Archived in DVD Players, Entry]

Rachael on 2003/02/23:

„A DVD film bought in the States, whilst on holiday, will render unplayable in your home machine (if purchased in Europe). Secondly, when a manufacturer of DVD players requests a license they have to agree to protect the code that decrypts the DVD. This may be unproblematic for some but for Linux users or those subscribing to the Linux vision this is unacceptable. This was incidentally the main argument /justification that Johansen gave in his defence.“

Dvd-Jon pt2 (found using query: cca jon dvd johansen)

„It was the MPA and DVD CCA that originally reported Johansen to Økokrim back in January 2000. In the attempt to protect intellectual rights, both of the right holder and of the publishers of copyrighted works, the CSS is imbedded into the DVD and into the hardware used to play the DVDs (-the DVD-players in your sitting room or on your computer). The DVD CCA justify their methods by claiming that while the film is being played in its decoded state – it is easy to copy.“

Dvd-Jon pt.1 (found using query: dvd-jon pt2 scrambling intellectual)

„This is is typical of me - I force myself out into the intellectual unknown! I'm am at the moment wading through the "Tingrettsavgjørelse ", the court's findings , of DVD-Jon's escapades. For my non-nordic readers (ooh it sounds so pompous), Jon Lech Johansen aka DVD-Jon or Jon "So Sue Me " Lech Johansen, was charged for designing a program (DeCSS) that cracked the "Content Scrambling System" on DVD films.“

The truth about the DVD case (found using query: css dvd dvd-jon scrambling)

„Pirate tools for extracting and decrypting DVD movies were availablebefore deCSS was released, so deCSS has definitelly not brought something newto the table for the pirates. The pirates didn't need the formula todescramble the movies, they just needed to mock up one of the existing playersso that it gave them the output instead of sending it to the graphics card (atleast that's how I believe they did it). I would rather think that manypirates are mad at Jon for getting these corporations to scramble for theirguns, the pirates will be watched more carefully in the future now when theseorganizations knows that their secret is out...“

DeCSS history / Jon Johansen, MoRE (found using query: css dvd dvd-jon scrambling)

„In most newspapers they vagely included the name MoRE, andthat DeCSS was a team effort, but neither MoRE nor DoD likedthe headlines. Jon's comment on this matter is:"I never told the media that I had cracked the dvd encryption. What I told them, was that we (MoRE) had made an app calledDeCSS which would decrypt dvd movies and let them be playedoff your hd, or off dvdrs if you have a dvd burner. I alwaysused _we_ and _MoRE_ when talking to them.“

„In the period September 1999 – 24 January 2000 by Internet from his home in X, [A] participated in breaking the technical protection system Content Scrambling System (‘CSS’), licensed by DVD Copy Control Association Inc, to protect DVD movies produced by Motion Pictures Association to prevent copying.
