For the past couple of years I’ve bought (or rented) DVDs instead of videotapes and played them on either the DVD player installed in my home computer (I ran a simple A/V cable from the computer to the TV, and used my computer's speakers for a “surround sound” effect) or our XBOX, which can double as a DVD player. Neither unit would arguably count as a “standalone” player, and yet I would contend that DVD as a technology has certainly entered our home. Yet it would seem we would not satisfy the “penetration” criteria mentioned above.“
