DVD Piracy
[Archived in Dvd Players Cheap, Entry]
Simon on 2003/12/02:
„The DVD machine industry has also created a paradox, because the higher-end models, costing upwards of £200, are security-protected against the playing of pirate DVDs, while the cheap, bargain-basement machines, the £60-and-under players, allow practically anything to be played on them. It is not the middle or upper classes who buy pirate DVDs. The target for the likes of Andy are those at the other end of the social ladder.“

Some slightly related:
„How profitable is anybody's guess, but we don't expect to see Jaws, Schindler's List, or Close Encounters of the Third Kind on disc anytime soon, even though Spielberg started releasing films from his Amblin production company on DVD last year (such as The Mask of Zorro). As for why Pulp Fiction and other titles lack special-edition content, it again comes down to profitability (extras cost money, after all), in addition to the desire of some studios to get discs on the market as fast as possible. Again, this trend is starting to change, and special-edition holdouts Disney, Fox, and Paramount are now releasing some feature-packed discs -- although not nearly as fast or as often as DVD stalwarts Warner and MGM.“http://www.dvdjournal.com/previousnews/1999/ news199903.html - Cached - Similar Pages
„Basically, the MPAA has been sending all the films on VHS/DVD to members in order to vote on the nominations. Small indie type films that get nominated are often inaccessible to older Oscar members because they play in obscure theaters or have short runs. The MPAA wants to stop sending out these film copies, because of internet piracy fears, but the indie producers and directors say this ban will hurt small filmmakers, while the big ones, backed by the incumbents, who have their movies on a lot of screens, will most likely be seen by members of the Academy (why does it feel so ridiculous, typing "members of the Academy"?).“http://journalism.berkeley.edu/projects/biplog/.../ cat_hollywood_vs_silicon_valley.html#001159 - Cached - Similar Pages

„And, this is the paradox (and price) of becoming the dominant economy in an increasingly globalized world. The more prosperous we are, relative to the rest of the world, the less secure that prosperity becomes. In the end, the only way to prevent exporting jobs is to select one of two choices: reduce our own living standards so that we can be competitive in the global marketplace; or, help raise the standard of living everywhere else to the point they have no unique comparative advantage based on commodity factors (like cost of doing business) alone.“http://www.aurorawdc.com/ci/2003_08.html#000022 - Cached - Similar Pages

„The appellate court bases its opinion on a DVD being vulnerable to injuries to such an extent that the purchaser must be permitted to make a copy, for instance of a movie in which he takes a special interest in preserving. One cannot see that the use of DeCSS represent any great danger for illegal reproduction of DVDs in competition with the movie producers. The legal history and the Berne Convention art 9 stipulates a weighing of interests, but in this case it is the interpretation of the copyright act sect 12 as part of a assessment of criminal law which is the issue, and in such a legal context the unconditional form of the wording of the provisions must, according to the view of the appellate court, be given considerable weight.“http://www.bstandal.com/archives/000114.html - Cached - Similar Pages
