Do the Right Thing and other badly misunderstood movies/books/music, etc.

[Archived in Entry]

[feminist blogs] There's a lot of talk in America on the subject of "personal responsibility", but there's not a whole lot of talk about what that means and that, I think, is what Do the Right Thing is ultimately about, beyond even the insightful themes of class and race. Lee gave the movie a title indicating the theme of "personal responsibility" for a very good reason--he puts his main character Mookie through a series of incidents where he is exhorted to take responsibility to make things right, but he has no fucking clue much of the time what the right thing to do even is. Of course, in typical Lee style, he has to even muck up that reading by putting the character in situations where he knows what to do, but he's just evading responsibility. But even this underscores the main point, which is responsibility is easy to talk up and hard to understand.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[De PRINCE Diaries] Prince Parenting Thought...: Meanwhile, fairness and shared of love and affection are important dimension of nurturing a children, parents tend to give their love and affection more to the youngest child, and enforces on the eldest one, and they always believe that the eldest assumes the ”˜Big Brother’ role in family to take care of the youngest, pressuring the eldest child. This will ultimately instill sibling rivalries, very often, when you talk to any adult who happen to be the eldest in family, they will tell you how they parent pamper their sister or brother, and they will relate their different childhood experience among the siblings by comparing with them personally, appears to be distinctive and harsh, the process of them, relating their experience proves the theory of Sibling rivalries.

[Mundanevania] Return of the Mack (it is): When one of the duty nurses came by to check on him, he said that with her and she would quite distinctly say to him "There's no cooking - it's bedtime! GO TO SLEEP!". I started taking my cue from her, and was a little more direct when I spoke to him. Since he couldn't remember it a minute later, maybe the tone would work.

[Billy Hayes - the weblog] Canadian Workers Postal Union Convention 2005: To see the speech delivered by Caroline Lee at the convention, please see the Full Story. Check against delivery. Speech to National Convention 2005 by Caroline Lee It is a great honor... preparing this speech, I asked myself: what shall I talk about? Shall I talk about feminism? Shall

[Aaronleewudrick.blogspot.com] Wudrick Blog: When it comes to political commentary, there is surely no sharper mind in this country than Andrew Coyne. Today's Post column hits the nail on the head (unlike the partisan analysis of Cherniak. Although you have to give Cherniak credit, he cheerleads for the Grits long after everyone else has abandoned any such pretence).

Home.earthlink.net[Home.earthlink.net] Another Freakin' Blog: Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are clean, but they are evil for the man who eats and gives offense. It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God.

Lynnedjohnson.comhttp://www.lynnedjohnson.com [Lynnedjohnson.com] Lynne d Johnson :: A Day In A Life: Lastly, the viciousness with which people are accused of racism and shunned accordingly is so a) calculating, b) enjoyed and c) pursued incessantly by its progenitors that it possesses all the hallmarks of the black and white thinking of so-called racists. It also closely mirrors the attributes of fasicm. If you make a point-by-point comparison of the attributes of the anti-racists and the so-called racists, you will find they match; after all, they both:

Neekole.comhttp://www.neekole.com [Neekole.com] neekole.com: I have to say that I have never met so many like-minded people in my life. I’m going to qualify that by comparing this experience to the Comic-Con experience for comic geeks, except that in SXSW, there’s a much more blurring of barriers between the producers/developers and the consumers/users. In essence, it’s almost like we are the same people. Bloggers, tech journalists, web developers, tech evangelists, content creators, designers, web masters/mavens — there is very little hierarchy amongst us here.

http://www.radgeek.com [Radgeek.com] It's Time To Talk About The Realities of Rape: Geekery Today 2001 ...: During the summer of 2001, the news came out that three women had been attacked at Auburn University by a serial rapist shortly before the end of the semester. The University, rather than taking the time and effort to contact Auburn students and their families about the risk to women on campus, put out a perfunctory set of condemnations, comments from the police, and Safety Measures for individual women to take. With the laudable exception ofcomments from Safe Harbor Women's Center (whose daily work is to provide advocacy and counseling for survivors of sexual assault), the University's response suffered from all the flaws that coverage of rape routinelysuffers from, and we in AWO were angry and disappointed that the University was recycling the same old rape myths and treating this as a PR problem rather than an issue of vital concern to its mission as a University, and wrote this letterin response. It was published in the Opelika-Auburn News in July.
