could have been better, could have been worse

[Archived in Entry]

http://www.tangognat.com [TangognaT] …was my reaction to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I did like seeing Mos Def and Bill Nighy. I also thought the knitting bit was hilarious. Rose Read has been collecting Marvin patterns.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[Sick Sad World - keep thinking happy thoughts] H2G2 Review and Thoughts: After the very funny opening musical sketch with the dolphins the film started where the book did; with Arthur laid down in front of the bulldozer. They really flew through this section, missing out on a lot of stuff, until they got onto the Vogon ship. At this point I thought they were just going to skim through the book and the film would seem like a series of sketches based on the book's more famous lines and situations. But once the Vogons got involved the film settled down and found it's own pace and story.

[leyton.org] Film Review: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Whilst the faults were many (no explanation of the slapping jokes, no return of the gun, not enough use of the book as a narrative and humour joke), and - in a nutshell - many of the things that this fan was hoping for being either missed, badly treated or simply messed up, it did have a lot to make up for it. The visuals were superb, I loved Marvin, the Vogans were brilliant, and Bill Nighy as Slartibartfarst was excellent. The plot might have been poorly construed and executed, leaving much missing or unexplained, but it made enough sense to carry the audience along with it.

http://lakeneuron.com [Lake Neuron] And thanks for all the fish: I was not disappointed. The filmmakers have deftly captured the whimsy and the basic plot of Douglas Adams’ book while making it work on its own level as a movie. My brother in California, another fan of the book, and I talked about this a week or two ago. He pointed out that purists have little grounds to complain about plot changes — after all, Adams’ book differed from his original BBC radio script, and Adams’ TV script differed from both of them.

Alan Rickman and Bill Bailey cast for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Marvin the robot is to be voiced by the stunningly awesome Alan Rickman, that man's voice alone can act better than a whole raft of Hollywood, and the voice of the Whale (Oh go read the book!) is to be given to one of the funniest UK comedians there is, Bill Bailey. Oh that man really is funny.

http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com  Hitchiker's Movie Blog: I hope I still feel the same when it's all over. Favourite moments so far include; cycling along the canal to Hensons and designing Vogons with them late into the night, storyboarding the movie on our boat, waking up to find new pages from Karey, seeing Warwick bring Marvin to life, Martin & Zooeys' screen test, the day they finished the Heart of Gold set, testing Zaphod's 2nd head, dragging Mos Def by his ankles across the floor during the Magrathean missile sequence, seeing the 2nd unit's mice footage, listening to Joby playing the overture on his piano, watching Sam Rockwell dance on Viltvodle 6, Bill Nighy, driving a golf cart down the corridor of Elstree Studios and being chased by the Big Brother security team, the first assemblyÉ I could go on forever. But then again, I could probably write an equally long list for all the irritating things that happened too!

http://forum.renegadecommentaries.co.uk  Renegade Forums > Mostly harmless news: Switch on your truth detector and take this rumor with a pound of salt until it's proven otherwise, but according to this report on the Magrathea fansite (which tracks news about THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY film), a prototype costume for Marvin the Paranoid Android has been accidentally made available on the internet (see photo). Magrathea webmaster M.J. Simpson tells readers in today's news report that the photo in question was brought to his attention by a fan "who innocently looked at a site which turned out to be producer Nick Goldsmith's blog!" Apparently the image was shortly removed from the blog thereafter.

Zenarchery.com » Blog Archive » H2G2: The Dr. Ellis Capsule Review: Having said that: Mos Def as Ford Prefect works, oddly, though you’d like to see more from him. Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent brings a great wit to the character that even Simon Jones didn’t have — he’s very good at playing legitimately confused, not confused-because-it’s-funny. Zooey Deschanel is great as Trillian.

Zenarchery.com » Blog Archive » Hitchhiker’s Guide Casting News: The current casting is some actor named Martin Freeman, who apparently appears in a BBC series called The Office, as Arthur Dent; Zooey Deschanel (whom I’m mainly familiar with from Almost Famous) as Trillian, Stephen Moore as Marvin (reprising his role from the BBC radio series and original TV show), and the hilarious Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast.
