China pushes for EVD standard

[Krunker | Technology Around the World] In an effort to reduce dependence on foreign developed technologies, China’s top electronics makers began rolling out new video players supporting a Chinese developed format called EVD. EVD stands for Enhanced Versatile Disc and is designed to produce higher picture quality than standard DVDs.

EVD, or Enhanced Versatile Disc, was first released in 2003, but an effort to promote it was dropped in 2004 after the players failed to catch on with consumers and producers squabbled over licensing fees. [Physorg.com] Chinese firms seek to replace DVDs with homegrown technology: Blue ray I think is going to be far superior to evd because of the ammount of data storage and the 1080p output, I doubt evds are going to come close if the systems are gonna be worth 90 bucks. Evd is gonna be like dvd2 for people not willing to step into the domain of HD.

The MPAA have a fit and issue lawsuits right, left and center,but by the time the suits are all settled, EVD has massive market share (atleast in Asia), and even if illegal to sell in Europe and the USA, there areloads of players being smuggled in.
